BRUTALISSANCE

ON ANONYMITY

BRUTALISSANCE gives its figures the visibility of monuments while withholding the public identity of their maker.

Their faces are present. The artist’s is absent.

The artist’s life is withheld as an interpretive frame for the figures and their stories.

Their faces and narratives are constructed. The artist remains responsible for those choices, whether publicly identified or not.

Withholding the artist’s identity can draw attention to the very absence it creates. BRUTALISSANCE cannot assume that anonymity keeps the artist out of the frame.

No biography to explain the work.
No reputation to excuse it.

If a work needs a name or face to survive, then the work has already failed and was never strong enough to stand on its own.
